🍂 Fall Beehive Prep: Set Your Bees Up for a Safe Winter

As the weather cools, it’s time to shift gears and get your beehives ready for winter. Fall prep is one of the most important things you can do to support your colony’s survival during the colder months. Here's how to make sure your bees stay safe, warm, and well-fed all winter long.

1. Check Food Stores

Your bees need around 60–80 lbs of honey to make it through the winter.
👉 Not enough? Feed them 2:1 sugar syrup or fondant.
👉 No pollen? Add pollen patties to support brood development.

2. Pick the Right Hive Spot

✔️ Face the hive toward the morning sun
✔️ Use windbreaks like fences, bushes, or hive wraps
✔️ Keep the entrance clear and flight path open
✔️ Raise the hive off the ground to prevent moisture buildup

3. Provide a Water Source

Bees need water—even in winter.
💧 Use a shallow dish with rocks or a heated birdbath in colder areas.

4. Control Pests

🛑 Treat for Varroa mites before winter hits
🐭 Install entrance reducers to keep out mice
🌬️ Watch for excess moisture and mold buildup

5. Insulate and Ventilate

In colder climates, consider adding:
🧊 Foam board insulation
🧣 Straw or hive wraps
💨 Upper ventilation to reduce condensation and freezing

6. Combine Weak Colonies

Got a struggling hive?
👩🌾 Combine it with a stronger one before winter—it’s better to overwinter one healthy colony than lose both.

🐝 Final Tip: Know Your Climate

Your fall prep should match your region. Dry area? Prioritize water. Cold winters? Focus on insulation. Milder winters? A simple wrap may be enough.
